Our Team: Deborah Verga

Deborah Verga has served as General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel at several software technology companies. She is an intellectual property attorney with extensive experience advising companies on a broad array of legal matters. This includes developing, maintaining and protecting patent and trademark portfolios, negotiating and drafting complex technology transfer and license agreements, enforcing intellectual property rights, and handling intellectual property aspects of corporate transactions. Deborah’s practice also involves counseling clients on compliance with global data privacy laws, including cross border data transfers, and negotiating agreements involving privacy and data security. She is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/EU) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).

Deborah has a strategic, business-focused approach to advising clients. Through her experience, in both private practice and as in-house counsel, she has become an effective negotiator with a proven ability to develop and implement intellectual property strategies suited for companies at all stages, from early startup phase to established business phase. Deborah has a passion for helping companies navigate intellectual property complexities to achieve their business objectives.

Over the course of her career as a registered patent attorney, she has also represented clients in patent litigation in Federal Courts and in patent prosecution, inter partes review, reexamination, and interference proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office. Deborah has counseled clients in a variety of technology fields, with an emphasis on computer software and hardware, telecommunications, storage and medical device industries.

Prior to joining West Hill, Deborah served from 2018 to 2019 as the General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel of UIL, a venture-funded startup revolutionizing the way OTT video is distributed, discovered, and consumed. As the chief legal officer, Deborah advised senior management on all legal matters including commercial transactions, data privacy and security, intellectual property and litigation. She also established a global data privacy program to ensure compliance with global privacy regulations.

Before joining UIL, Ms. Verga was the Chief Intellectual Property Counsel at Vidscale, Inc. which was acquired by Ericsson: ERIC. She has also served as an Intellectual Property Attorney for Raytheon Company, as a Pro Bono Intellectual Property Consultant and as a Partner at Lorusso & Loud.

Deborah received a J.D. from Boston University School of Law, Edward F. Hennessey Scholar, and a B.A. from Brandeis University in Computer Science, magna cum laude. She is a member of the Massachusetts District Court Bar, the First Circuit Court of Appeals Bar, Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Bar and registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She is also a member of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Boston Patent Law Association, American Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association and Women’s Bar Association of Massachusetts.
